The debate: Ai within society

Rave:

AI is transforming medicine — discovering drug candidates in months instead of years, helping doctors catch diseases earlier through pattern recognition in scans, and personalising treatment plans based on a patient's own treatment pathway.

It's boosting productivity across nearly every industry, automating repetitive and tedious tasks so people can redirect their time toward creative, strategic, and higher-value work that machines can't replicate. Many of my peers and myself have used AI to support for a number of reasons.

It's strengthening disaster response and safety — predicting extreme weather with more lead time, optimising emergency resource allocation, and monitoring hazardous industrial sites in real time to prevent accidents before they happen. This is pivotal in the safety and guidance to society.

Rage:

AI is displacing workers faster than economies can retrain them, and the economic gains from this shift flow disproportionately to a small number of already-powerful companies, widening inequality rather than shrinking it. Marketing, recruitment and creatives are but a few to name that are feeling the brunt.

Bias baked into training data has led to discriminatory outcomes in the real world — from hiring algorithms that favor certain demographics to policing tools that disproportionately flag minority communities.

Privacy is eroding as AI enables mass surveillance at a scale never before possible, there have been many cases in recent times of AI going “awol” and becoming “self aware”. This is frightening and something that we as a society have never seen before.

Conclusion:

There is no doubt that AI has transformed the way we work, create and adapt to fast paced and ever changing environments. It is becoming stronger and understand to what we require from it at rapid speeds. My concern is, are we creating something that we do not fully understand yet? Are we losing our natural curiosity and creativeness? Should we be more concerned with the speed that it is evolving?

I appreciate that you may think I am a hypocrite as I use AI (and please tell me this in the comments) but I feel we are stepping into a period of technology that we do not know enough about and it will come back to haunt us.
